Jalan Batai Char Kuey Teow (Klang)

Hello all! Today let's explore a famous street food of Malaysia - Char Kuey Teow (Fried Kuey Teow).

For Klangites, it is not easy finding a good Char Kuey Teow that resembles Penang style. I prefer Penang style for its wok hey, umami taste, large prawn and fresh cockles. And i am truly lucky that few months ago, i found this gem located in Jalan Gelugor, Klang.

The shop - names as Jalan Batai Char Kuey Teow is nestled amongst few eateries on the same row along Jalan Gelugor. This area is a busy area on weekdays because it is located around shops, banks and companies and is a famous spot that working adults will frequent for their lunch.

I have been to this shop for a few times now, almost once every month. Why is it so worth going back for?

For me, an epitome of a good CKT would have to be the wok hey and also large prawn and cockles. Taugeh and chinese chives (Kau choy in cantonese) is also a must for me. I am particular of the colors too. I have eaten a few CKT that is too pale in color - somehow the lack of soy sauce sometimes makes it lack some caramelization which can result in a nice charred taste. Too dark in color is not pleasing either - it somehow camouflage the color of other ingredients - eggs, taugeh, chives and prawns.

This shop here serves it just right. They are very particular about their quality, and even though it claims to open everyday, please be sure to call them to check if they are open before you go. This is because sometimes the lady boss will choose not to operate when they cant get fresh large prawns or cockles. You may call this number: 016 9498042 to check if they are operating.

To my taste bud, they are pretty consistent in taste and i like the flavor of the CKT. Not too salty, but still flavorful, each plate usually comes with 2 large prawns and some cockles. I am not a fan of raw cockles, so theirs is cooked just with the right doneness. The taugehs used are fat and short (i supposed it is Ipoh's taugeh) and still maintain its crunch. They also includes chives which lend a nice taste. You can also taste generous garlicky flavour, pork lard and also choy poh (preserved /salted dried radish). Each portion has a generous egg portion - according to the lady boss, they only use large egg (A size) and you may also asked to have duck egg instead of chicken egg at additional price.

The price just went up last few days following the price increase in everything :( and now it cost RM9.00 per plate of normal CKT/ CKT with yellow noodles. If you would like to have duck egg added, it will cost RM10 per plate.

Service is pretty fast and usually when i frequent them on weekend morning, the crowd is reasonable. Within 15-20 minutes of ordering, you can get your plate of piping hot CKT served.

So, if you like CKT as much as i do, you may visit them and try it out! My ratings for this CKT are as below:

Accessibility / parking: 🌟🌟 out of 5 stars. Depending on when you are going. On a weekend morning you may still find some parkings.

Cleanliness: 🌟🌟 this is just a row of shops, not posh café, so don't expect it to be very clean. However, generally tables and chairs, floors are clean and since it is a very "open" area, there is no unpleasant smell.

Taste: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 So far the best CKT for me. I believe many Klangites would agree too.

Price: 🌟🌟 Now at RM9, it is consider a little expensive, but with 2 very fresh, springy prawns and cockles, i think it is still affordable once or twice a month for that CKT craving.

Portion: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Just nice for me. May not be too filling for a big eater.

Service: 🌟🌟🌟 For a hawker stall kind of environment, the lady who take order is attentive. I always call them before i go and the call is being picked up speedy enough. No black face spotted so far. lol.

The plus point of this eating place is they also have some other food served in different shops if you are not a fan of CKT. You may try Hiang Kee Chicken Rice or Kar Ping's mee hoon kueh.

So, here's some photos of this delicacies. Enjoy!
